Designed for the rugged coast of Maine Coast to sail in the chop and wind off Biddeford Pool, this knock-about is a sleek, sturdy, and dependable beauty with a high cut bow reminiscent of John Alden’s classic schooners.
Graceful and stable under heavy seas she cuts through the water like a ghost under light winds. Vixen is truly one of the finest wooden boat designs of her size and perfect for the unpredictable weather of the Maine coast.

Vixen is a wood gaffed rig sloop. Full keel with 900-lb lead ballast. 19’3” length, 4’6” beam, 3’6” draft. Weight 2000 lbs.
The first of the original five (5) Biddeford Pool One Design’s was named Sea Fox. Vixen’s name is counterpoint named for the female fox.
Built 1979 by the Landing School, Kennebunkport, to the highest standards.
John G. Alden Design no. 83 from 1917, as featured in John Alden and His Yacht Designs, Carrick and Henderson. Original sail plan by Carl Alberg as a young draftsman in Alden’s firm. (Owner has print of sail plan.) Later in 1937, John Alden loved the lines of the Biddeford Pool One Design so much so that they inspired his design for the Sakonnet One Design for his own club and owned two in his lifetime.

All lines lead to cockpit for ease in single handling. Self-tending jib. Mainsail ties off to mast hoops for luff, but slides on track for boom and gaff. Topping lift and lazy jacks.
Oak frames, white cedar planking, oak toe and rub rails, oak tiller, ash coamings and mahogany thwarts. Silicon bronze fastened. All bronze cleats and hardware. Canvas deck (replaced in 1998 to authentic specifications) is over the original marine plywood. Other work done during the same retrofit included wooding the rails, new silicon bronze screws, bungs, and brightwork finish. New rudder built by French & Webb in 1998. Sitka spruce spars (solid section) are all bright with West System first coat and varnish top-coats. Leather covered oak gaff jaws for the main boom and gaff are held with parrel lines.
Lazarette has heart-shaped door. Foreward cuddy has ample area to store sails, anchor line, and life jackets, cushions and more.
Sunbrella “Pacific Blue” color cover tent for the main and sail cover for the jib.
White hull, varnished transom, copper green bottom, Epifanes no. 2 cream yellow deck, light gray floor boards.
Motor mount: Handyboat oak/bronze included in sale, but not motor.
Anchor line (75 feet?) and Danforth anchor.
Internal manual pump bailer.
Compass in bulkhead.
